What Landscaping in Oak Hill Has to Deal With
Oak Hill sits on the eastern edge of the Hill Country, where limestone rimrock is common and solid rock sits close to the surface. The soil is shallow and rocky, so a shovel hits stone fast. That ground drains quickly and dries out hard, so plants with shallow roots struggle. We plan around it. We build raised beds and bring in good soil where the native layer is too thin. We lean on deep-rooted native plants that are built for this land. Summers are long and hot, so the work here rewards smart grading and drip irrigation over thirsty lawns. The area also has a lot of mature live oaks, the trees that gave the old settlement of Live Oak Springs its name. Protecting their roots is a real part of the job.

Removing a protected tree (19 inches across the trunk or more) or a heritage tree (any oak 24 inches across or larger) takes a permit and may require replanting. Austin Water is in its Conservation Stage, which limits homes with automatic sprinklers to one watering day a week. Much of Oak Hill also drains into the Williamson Creek watershed, part of the Edwards Aquifer recharge area, where impervious cover limits keep paving and runoff in check. Ean Nambo has a great eye for design and practicality that is more important for Austin area homeowners now than ever. We had a functional problem of water pooling at our front door during heavy rains. We had a design problem of a front yard that was 20% grass and 80% weeds that required mowing and turned brown during droughts. I challenged Ean to help me create a xeriscaped front yard that diverts water away from our house and into the street and that looks like the updated and modern home that we've created. I wanted to avoid installing a lawn that would be thirsty for water in our climate and I had some ideas for including a dry creek running through the property. I am thrilled with the results! I love the look and the dry creek bed did its job during a recent deluge. Ean had ideas to make the most of a courtyard area that converted the space into an additional gathering area and I couldn't be happier with the result. He also included dramatic landscape lighting installation that showcases the lovely texture of the limestone exterior and the grace of our live oaks that have survived the recent freezes. I wanted to avoid over planting, so as we planted a few things. I'm happy with this strategy, because I can see which plants work best in which areas for future plantings.
