What We Build With, and Why It Lasts Here
A landscape in Austin is only as good as what it is made of. Thin soil over limestone on the west side, clay that swells and shrinks closer in, hundred-degree summers, and the occasional hard freeze all punish shortcuts. These are the four materials we build with most, and what we have learned about making each one last in this city.
Native limestone, flagstone, and pavers set the bones of most of our builds: seat walls, retaining walls, patios, walkways, and outdoor kitchen surrounds. We pick stone that handles Austin heat, drought, and the shifting clay and limestone underneath it. Every wall also gets the base and drainage work behind it that decides whether it still stands straight in ten years.
We cut, weld, and finish steel in house using MIG, TIG, and arc, so planters, gates, railings, edging, and pergola frames are made for your property instead of ordered from a catalog. Corten weathers to a deep rust patina and then stops, which is why we reach for it on planters and privacy screens. Everything else gets finished to resist rust through Austin humidity and sun.
The same pour can read four completely different ways: a clean broom finish, stamped texture, an integral or acid stain, or exposed aggregate. We use it for patios, driveways, walkways, and pool decks. Austin clay moves with the weather, so the base, reinforcement, and control joints are planned before anyone mixes anything. That is the part that keeps a slab flat instead of spidered with cracks in three summers.
Cedar takes the Austin sun well and weathers to a soft silver grey if you let it, which is why most of our pergolas and covered patios start there. Longer spans get a steel frame we fabricate ourselves, sometimes wrapped in cedar so the structure reads as wood. Footings, hardware, and roof tie-ins are sized for real wind and real rain, not just for the photo.
